The right amount of watering at the right time is pivotal in keeping your lawn at its healthiest and most beautiful. Depending on the average rainfall your lawn receives, you may need to consider buying a sprinkler system. Though it may seem like a no-brainer task, buying a sprinkler system can be time consuming. You need to think about what system is best for your yard type.

Generally, you will make the decision of an above ground or underground sprinkler system based on how much time you want to invest in maintaining the system, the size of your lawn and how much cash you want to spend.

Underground systems are typically more expensive, but if you have an enormous lawn, then they are the best choice. Underground systems make it easier by far to maintain your lawn watering since you won’t have to worry about removing the sprinklers each time you mow or work on your lawn.

If your lawn is somewhat smaller, on the other hand, an elaborate underground system might be going a little overboard. At the low end of the scale of above ground sprinklers, you can buy a sprinkler attachment for your garden hose and just place that on the lawn. This method can work for larger lawns if you live in an area where the average daily or weekly inches rainfall is non sufficient.

Choosing sprinkler heads is not rocket science. Rotor heads are extremely handy for covering large lawns with a uniform amount of water. For sloping areas and soils with high amounts of clay, the dispersal rate of rotors is much slower running, at around a half inch to three quarters of an inch per hour; making them more suitable for this type of terrain. Most rotor heads are available in single or double heads with two nozzles that can water at varying distances. Know the type of soil and the average rainfall in your area before buying a sprinkler system.

To determine how much water your sprinkler system is distributing, just set up a rain gauge electronic, or make one yourself by placing several receptacles like jars, cans or small buckets of the same size around your lawn. Turn the system on and after ten minutes, turn it off. Measure the water depth to determine the length of time to water. For example, if after ten minutes it contains a fifth of an inch of water, then you know you will need to run your system for fifty minutes to apply a full inch to your lawn. Additionally, how much you need to water your lawn also depends on the average rainfall in your area.

At first glance, it may not seem all that complicated to water your lawn. It is a no-brainer, right? You turn on the sprinkler or the soaker hoses, making sure to soak the bushes and trees. You typically do it when you have the time; after work or dinner. What more is there to it? Sorry to make something so simple a little bit complicated, but knowing when and when not to water your lawn is actually a science. With the help of a rain gauge and rainfall data, you can help your yard become healthier and more beautiful.

There are a few issues to consider when watering your lawn, such as the time of day, new rainfall, the method of watering, the weather and the use of chemicals, such as fertilizers in the water. These are all important factors to think about.

The weather is a big factor as well. Take a look at the weather report before you water your lawn, just in case rain has been forecasted. Keep a rain gauge in your yard so you can measure rainfall that your area receives and adjust your watering accordingly. If you are the one doing the watering, then make sure your sprinkler system spreads an even path across the lawn. Many people get into a habit of setting out a sprinkler and never moving it. That is fine for the patches that get the water, but this type of uneven watering can lead to uneven greenness. Put out any type of straight-sided container to help you measure your sprinkler’s application rate.

Try not to apply fertilizer or chemical treatments to your lawn when rain is expected. The rain will wash the nutrients out of the root system and down the drain, making your efforts for naught. Always follow the directions on the packaging and make sure that you water as directed. This ensures that you don’t burn your lawn or the root system. A rain gauge can help remind you of how wet your soil is and when a good time to apply fertilizer will be.

Through harvesting those rainfall inches falling from the sky for human and animal consumption, water bills are reduced as well as costs for distribution. New rainfall catchment systems provide valuable reserves during times of drought and saves land that would otherwise have to be used for reservoirs. This can be extremely important in parts of the world where rain is scarce or where over-population occurs. By harvesting rainwater, any area can reduce costs and the strain on natural resources.

Rain water collection systems can alleviate some of the issues resulting from using water treated with chemicals intended to make water safe for human consumption. Of course, the rainfall inches are not without toxins, but the pH level and chemical makeup is still much better suited to provide plants with the necessary substances they need to thrive on versus that coming from most taps.

A closely related process to rainwater harvesting is groundwater recycling. These systems also recycle new rainfall, but in a way that it is concentrated in a single area, like where crops and plants are to be grown. This is also referred to as groundwater harvesting and is common where wells only provide enough water for people and animals, but are generally strained to meet the needs of crops or gardens. Groundwater recharging is the term used for changing groundwater into a drinkable form, and it is very common in areas that receive daily water in rainy seasons.

It is true that rainwater harvested from roofs can contain impurities directly related to the roof itself. Additionally, there are instances where collected rain water contains pesticides and other contaminants. Since this is the case, many times the water in rainwater containers or tanks must be purified before it can be used as drinking water. This can be done through filtering, boiling or through the use of additives like chlorine. The purification of rainwater can also be done even earlier in the process by placing filters in the tubing that directs the water into the storage tanks.

Hoses, gravity, dripping or watering cans are a few of the ways by which those rainfall inches can get to your plants, depending on the area that needs to be irrigated. Trenches dug up to and around your garden area can provide an excellent route for the water to flow and percolate. With a minimal expenditure of time and money, an irrigation system based on rainwater collection can be set up that is not only environmentally sound, but also effective and easy to use.

Wireless outdoor thermometers and rain gauges are always handy for the person who spends a lot of their day outside and needs to keep track of what the temperature is at any given time. These thermometers are especially useful because they have a lot more features than traditional thermometers do. Today, technology allows us to monitor the temperatures of both outside and inside weather with just one device. There is no need to go outside on a cold day to check the thermometer to see what the temperature is. They can even be programmed to compare the temperature between the inside and the outside of the home, if a remote sensor is used.

There are two things that a person needs to do when buying a digital rain gauge and wireless thermometer combo. First of all, you need to decide on which thermometer to buy, and second, you need to be able to install and synchronize the thermometer rain gauge. When deciding on a thermometer, one of the most important factors to consider is price range. When you establish a budget, then you know how much you want to pay and can eliminate the need to look at thermometers that are out of your price range.

Depending on the thermometer rain gauge, many extra features are available that can add to the cost of the unit. You should evaluate whether you really want or need these added features before buying. Outdoor thermometers come in many styles and can run the gambit of basic and practical to high tech and expensive.

When setting up a thermometer/rain gauge wireless device, you should follow certain steps. First, you need to remove the base unit as well as the remote unit from the packaging and do a quick inspection of them to make sure everything is present and in the right place. This step can help you avoid wasting time synchronizing the device if there is clearly a missing part or piece. Now is the time to install the batteries in each unit.

Generally, the synchronization process will require the person to follow exact instructions that are included with the thermometer rain gauge unit. Some devices use a radio clock that must also be synchronized and set to the correct time zone.

It is important to remember that the remote and the base of the thermometer rain gauge need to be fairly close to each other. You should consider where you will use the remote before you decide on a place to install the base unit. Outdoor thermometers can save you time and provide you with vital information to start your day.

The typical classic mercury barometer is a glass tube that is almost three feet high and is packed with mercury. The tube lies upside down in a reservoir, which holds the mercury. It was invented by Evangelista Torricelli in 1643. By recording rainfall data, wind speeds and trends, it was past weather that helped him understand how barometric pressure works. A barometer is a useful tool in predicting the weather and meteorologists use them to understand when a low front that brings rain and wind is on its way.

Air rising away from the earth’s surface faster than it can be substituted by air streaming in from surrounding areas creates a low pressure zone. This decreases the weight of the air over the barometer reservoir; thus the mercury level moves to a lower level. Conversely, in high pressure zones, air is moving towards the earth’s surface faster than it can stream out to surrounding zones. This produces more air over the reservoir; thus the air’s weight surges higher and the mercury level moves higher to create equilibrium.

A decline in atmospheric pressure is a sign of windy and generally rainy conditions, while an increase in atmospheric pressure means cooler and drier conditions. A gradual drop in atmospheric pressure means that a low pressure area is briefly happening in a neighboring area; but it is unlikely that you will see any noticeable variations in the weather where you are located. Minor, quick falls in air pressure indicate a nearby variation in weather and short periods of wind and shower conditions typically come after them. A sudden fall in air pressure in a short period of time often indicates that a storm is expected to occur within five to six hours and will only be short-lived. Meteorologists know this because they have studied past weather, including wind speeds, rainfall maps and rainfall records.

An example of barometric pressure is when a rubber suction cup is pressed against a smooth surface, as it will remain stuck. By simply pressing the cup down flat against the wall surface, the air is expelled from the area under the cup and a vacuum is then formed. The pressure of the air which originally acted in that area now no longer thrusts against the inside of the cup. When it is released, it will stay in the compressed position because the air pressure is acting on the outside only and therefore presses the edge of the cup down so firmly that no air can penetrate into the area which remains void of air.

If a long glass tube is filled with mercury and is then stood upright with the opening end pointing downwards into a dish containing mercury, much of the mercury will flow out of the tube until a column of mercury forms. The air pressure acts upon the surface of the mercury in the dish and is therefore able to hold up a high mercury column. It is experiments like this, along with studies of past weather information such as rainfall data, cloud types and winds speed that allow scientists to predict future weather.
